Can you really make a substantial income working from home?

This is a question I spent a lot of time thinking about before I decided to quite my day job and become a full time freelancer, working from home. I’m 38, single mother and sell gardening equipment for a living.

The answer to the question is Yes. Based on personal experience, I’d say that its very much possible to make a good living working from home. However, there are some things you need to take into account before you take the plunge:

Balance – unlike a day job, where you’re working for someone else, being your own boss and working from home is very different. It’s easy to get carried away into working long hours and losing all sense of your work/life balance. Personally, you could say I'm a ‘workaholic’ so this didn’t bother me but I know that there are many of us out there who prefer to have a balance and its important to be disciplined. Set working hours even if you’re home – this allows you to separate your personal life from work and have time for leisure.

Delegate – I use a virtual secretary quite extensively. I find this helps ease my workload and gives me more time to enjoy other activities or do what I do best whilst the leave the time consuming tasks in the hand of my assistant.

Sense - if your work doesn’t involve meeting people/clients, then being home all day, even if you are working can become a chore. Taking a 5-10 minute walk BEFORE work can give you the sense of “going to work” even if its just home.

Social – I try to make it a point to pop out for lunch on a daily basis, just the same way I did at work. its good to take a break and being outside, meeting people helps me think of more ideas to grow my business.

If you’re thinking of quitting your day job then by all means do so. However, have a carefully planned strategy ahead of you so you can make the most from the potential benefits of working from home.
